Is dampness causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell in my son's room, especially when he comes home from school. The humidity seems to be particularly high there, even though I keep the windows open during the day. My kids have been coughing more frequently lately and I suspect it might be due to the dampness. Is there anything specific I can do to address this issue in my bedroom to ensure a healthier environment for them?

Dampness indeed can contribute to respiratory issues like coughing, especially for children. The musty smell and increased frequency of coughs you're experiencing could be linked to high humidity levels in your son's room. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we often experience variable weather conditions that can lead to fluctuations in indoor moisture content, making it crucial to maintain proper humidity control.

Firstly, understanding the relative humidity (RH) is key. For healthy living spaces, ideal RH should ideally stay between 30-50%. Your home's environment can be assessed with a hygrometer—a device specifically designed for measuring humidity levels. You've noted that you keep windows open during the day; however, in Dubai’s climate, this might not always suffice due to high external humidity or rain events.

It is highly recommended to invest in a dehumidifier suitable for your room size and space requirements. Models with automatic shut-off features are beneficial to prevent over-drying of the air which can be equally harmful as excessive moisture. For effective operation, ensure regular cleaning and maintenance of the unit’s water collection tray and filters.

Another practical measure is improving ventilation systems. If possible, consider installing a whole-house fan or an HVAC system that includes dehumidification capabilities. These systems offer better control over humidity levels and can provide more consistent comfort throughout your home.

Additionally, addressing any potential sources of moisture is essential. Check for leaks in the roof, walls, or plumbing, as these could be contributing factors to high humidity. Promptly fixing such issues prevents mold growth, which can exacerbate respiratory problems like coughing.

It's important to note that regular professional inspections are advisable, especially if the problem persists despite your efforts. These inspections should cover not just your son’s bedroom but also other parts of your home and can be conducted by certified professionals who comply with UAE regulations such as those set out in EN 15380:2006 for indoor air quality.
