How to permanently remove and prevent bedroom wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing Deira. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s spreading.
What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, extremely common in Deira and across the UAE due to the high humidity, especially when furniture is placed against an exterior wall. That wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for mold.
For permanent removal and prevention, a two-step process is critical: correct remediation followed by addressing the source. First, do NOT just wipe it with bleach. This can spread spores and doesn't address the root cause. For a small area, a solution of distilled white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide can be used. Scrub gently, contain the area with plastic sheeting, and wear proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). However, given it's behind a wardrobe and you're worried about spreading, this indicates it might be more extensive than surface-level. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom. Prevention is the only permanent solution. You MUST address the humidity and lack of air circulation. • Move the wardrobe at least 2-3 inches away from the exterior wall to allow air to circulate behind it. • Ensure your AC is running consistently and is correctly sized for the room. Set it to a constant temperature, even when you're out, to control humidity levels (aim for below 60% RH). • Use a high-quality dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid winter months. • Consider having a professional apply a anti-microbial coating to the affected wall after remediation to inhibit future growth. For a case like this, where the mold is on a structural element and hidden, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden moisture and humidity meters to pinpoint the exact conditions causing the problem. DIY attempts often fail because the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.
