AC mold on coils: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making a weird gurgling sound and the air in our bedroom just isn't as cold as it used to be, even though the unit is running constantly. I opened the panel in the hallway and saw a bunch of black, fuzzy mold around the coils of the chiller unit. It's been like this for about two weeks and I'm worried it's affecting our health and the electricity bill. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional HVAC company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described – gurgling sound, reduced cooling, constant running, and visible black mold on the evaporator coils – this is a serious issue that requires immediate professional attention. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with a retail spray.

The mold growth inside your AC's air handling unit (AHU) is a significant health hazard. The system is actively blowing these spores throughout your bedroom and entire apartment, which can cause or exacerbate respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues. The reduced cooling and constant operation are classic signs that the mold and likely other debris are severely insulating the coils, forcing the compressor to work overtime and skyrocketing your DEWA bill.

In the UAE's high-humidity environment, this is a common but dangerous problem. A DIY approach is insufficient and risky. Standard household cleaners can damage the delicate aluminum fins of the coil, and more critically, they will not address the root cause: moisture control. Without proper equipment like HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial coatings, and HVAC expertise, you will simply aerosolize the mold, making the contamination worse.

Our certified technicians are trained in HVAC hygienization following NADCA standards. We perform a comprehensive cleaning, apply an EPA-approved antimicrobial solution to prevent regrowth, and identify the moisture source to stop it from happening again. For your health and your wallet, this is not a DIY job.
