How to permanently remove closet mold and prevent dampness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit for the last few weeks, and now I've found black fuzzy mold growing on the back wall and on a couple of my leather bags. I wiped it down with vinegar, but I'm worried it's just going to come back, especially with the summer humidity coming. What's the most effective way to kill the mold for good and protect my stuff from this dampness?

The black fuzzy mold you've described is a clear indication of a persistent moisture issue, exacerbated by the high humidity and constant AC use typical of Dubai's climate. Your use of vinegar is a common first step, but it is insufficient for a permanent solution, especially on porous surfaces like drywall and leather, where the fungal roots (hyphae) penetrate deeply.

The most effective protocol begins with identifying and rectifying the source. The AC leakage must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent ongoing dampness. For the mold itself, surface cleaning is not enough. The affected drywall likely requires professional assessment; if the contamination is extensive, removal and replacement of the wall section may be necessary to eliminate the hidden mold colony. For your leather goods, specialized biocides designed for delicate materials are required to kill the mold without causing damage.

To protect your belongings and prevent recurrence, environmental control is critical. After remediation, maintain the closet's relative humidity below 60%. This can be achieved by ensuring the AC is correctly sized and serviced, using a standalone dehumidifier, and improving air circulation with a small fan. Installing a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel can also help in enclosed spaces.

For a situation involving AC units and structural materials, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We at Saniservice are certified to conduct comprehensive moisture mapping and air quality testing to determine the full extent of the contamination, in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines. Our remediation process uses industrial-grade HEPA filtration and EPA-approved antimicrobials to ensure complete removal and prevent regrowth.
