Black mold causing our headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. My husband and I have both had a persistent stuffy nose and headaches for the last month and we can't figure out why. Is it possible this is the cause, and who do we call to get it properly tested and removed?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind your wardrobe is the direct cause of your persistent headaches and stuffy noses. These are classic symptoms of exposure to mold spores, specifically mycotoxins released by certain types of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"). The confined space of a bedroom, combined with prolonged exposure over a month while sleeping, creates a significant health risk.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The high ambient humidity, especially during summer months, condenses on cooler surfaces like exterior walls. When a large piece of furniture like a wardrobe is placed against that wall, it severely restricts airflow, trapping moisture and creating the perfect dark, damp environment for mold to thrive. Year-round air conditioning can also contribute if units are not properly maintained or if the condensate drain lines are blocked, leading to excess humidity indoors.

For a case of this magnitude, a professional inspection is absolutely critical. DIY testing kits are unreliable. A certified inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping with thermal imaging cameras and air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This data is essential for designing an effective remediation protocol, as mandated by UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor environmental quality.

Do not attempt to remove this yourself, as improper handling will aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and exacerbating your health issues. For proper testing and safe, guaranteed removal, you must call a specialized remediation company.

I strongly recommend you contact Saniservice immediately. They are experts in mold remediation specifically for the UAE's climate and building standards. Call them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
