Is closet mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I've just noticed a bunch of dark, fuzzy patches spreading in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store the winter clothes. We had a small leak from the AC unit in that room a couple of months ago that we thought was fixed. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and should I keep them out of the room entirely until it's done?

Based on your description of dark, fuzzy patches following an AC leak, it is highly probable you are dealing with a significant mold infestation, and it is very likely a contributing factor to your children's persistent coughing. The dark, fuzzy appearance is characteristic of active fungal growth, and the proximity to a moisture source (the AC leak) confirms the conditions for its proliferation.

The urgency for professional treatment is high. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, an active colony can spread rapidly through the HVAC system and porous materials like drywall and clothing. The spores released are a known respiratory irritant and allergen, especially for children. You should restrict their access to the room immediately to prevent further exposure.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, contaminating other areas of your home and exacerbating health issues. A professional inspection is critical. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to determine the full extent of the contamination, including inside the wall cavity and the AC system itself, which is often the primary dissemination point.

Remediation involves source identification, full containment, HEPA filtration, and the safe removal of contaminated materials, followed by antimicrobial treatment and verification testing to ensure the space is safe. For a situation involving child health and a prior leak, this is not a DIY project.
