Should I clean mold from my AC or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these black speckles spreading out from the vent in the corner. The room smells really damp and my throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or should I call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black speckles spreading from the AC vent, a persistent damp smell, and a scratchy throat—this is a strong indicator of active mold growth, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, AC units are prime locations for such growth, as the constant condensation provides the perfect moisture source, especially when a leak is present.

Attempting a DIY cleanup with bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like carpet and drywall; it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, allowing it to regrow quickly. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, significantly increasing your exposure and potentially contaminating other areas of your home.

The situation you describe requires a professional assessment. UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality, and a certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden within the AC ductwork and under the carpet padding.

For a situation involving a recurring leak, visible growth, and health symptoms, I strongly recommend you call a professional remediation company. At Saniservice, our certified technicians use industry-standard protocols including containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to safely and permanently resolve the issue.
