Is this black mold on clothes dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in these black, fuzzy spots. The room has felt a bit damp since we ran the AC less during the cooler weather. Is this the dangerous black mold I keep hearing about and how do I clean it safely with my family in the house?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold infestation, and the black, fuzzy spots are a significant concern. In the UAE's climate, high humidity and condensation, particularly in enclosed spaces like wardrobes on exterior walls, create the perfect environment for mold growth when AC usage is reduced. The constant cycling between cool AC and warm, humid air leads to condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive on organic materials like cotton and wool.

While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, many other black-colored molds (like Aspergillus niger) are also common here and can cause health issues. The persistent coughing in your children is a strong indicator of exposure to mold spores, which are potent respiratory irritants and allergens, especially for young ones.

Do not attempt to clean these clothes with DIY methods like bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the indoor air quality, putting your family at greater risk. Agitating the material will release millions of spores.

For a situation involving health symptoms and a substantial growth on porous materials like clothing, professional assessment is imperative. We strongly recommend you call for a professional inspection and testing. Our certified experts can identify the specific species and its concentration to determine the appropriate remediation protocol. We can also advise on whether the items can be salvaged through industrial-grade hygienization or must be safely disposed of.
