Is my child's cough from bathroom mold dangerous?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now and we just found a patch of black mold behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It’s been so humid lately and the window doesn’t open, so I’m really worried their symptoms are connected. How dangerous is this, and should I take them to a doctor immediately or will cleaning it properly be enough?

Based on your description, it is very plausible that your children's persistent cough is connected to the mold growth in your bathroom. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, especially during summer and in buildings where windows are sealed and ventilation relies solely on AC, bathrooms become prime locations for mold proliferation. The black patch behind the toilet is likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), both of which are known to produce allergens and irritants.
The constant coughing is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, which become airborne and are inhaled, irritating the respiratory tract. For children, whose immune systems are still developing, this reaction can be more pronounced. While cleaning the visible patch is a necessary first step, it is unlikely to be sufficient. The visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg"; the mold may have penetrated porous surfaces like drywall or grout, and spores are likely circulating in the bathroom's air. I strongly recommend you have your children evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out any other causes and to address their current symptoms. For the mold itself, a professional inspection is critical. DIY cleaning can inadvertently aerosolize a high concentration of spores, worsening the problem. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the moisture source and contamination, which is often hidden within walls or under flooring. Following Dubai Municipality guidelines for environmental health, we then perform contained remediation using HEPA filtration to ensure spores are captured, not spread. Given the health symptoms and the conducive conditions in your bathroom, I would classify this as a case requiring professional assessment.
