How to safely remove closet mold and save clothes?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has felt damp for a while, and when I pulled out my winter clothes today, I found a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the back wall and on a couple of my jackets. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I’m really worried about our health and my belongings. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and is it safe to keep the clothes after a proper wash?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to condensation forming on the cooler exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate exacerbated by constant AC use. For a small patch (under 1 sqm), you can clean it yourself with proper precautions.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the wall with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry with a fan. The root cause is excess moisture; inspect for any leaks from the adjacent room or AC unit, and consider using a moisture-absorbing product like a desiccant bag in the closet to prevent recurrence.

For your clothes, a proper wash can save them. Take them outside to brush off any loose spores. Then, wash them in the hottest water safe for the fabric with a mold-killing additive like borax or a few cups of vinegar. Sun-drying is highly effective for further disinfection.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the extent. In such cases, a company with its own microbiology lab can provide the necessary testing to identify the mold species and verify remediation success, which is crucial for peace of mind and health, especially for anyone with allergies or respiratory conditions.
