Black grout in shower: call mold pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, especially around the shower area. It's been slowly getting worse over the last couple of months, and I've tried cleaning it with bleach spray but it just comes back a week later. I'm worried the humidity is making it spread behind the walls. Should I just call a professional mold removal company, and if so, what's a reasonable price I should expect for a bathroom this size in Dubai?

Black grout in showers is extremely common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and daily condensation from hot showers. While often just surface mold, its recurrence after cleaning suggests a persistent moisture issue that may extend deeper.

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the root cause—moisture trapped in the porous grout. For a recurring problem, a professional inspection is wise to assess if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles, which is a risk in our climate.

A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to check the walls and may recommend a lab test if they suspect harmful species. For a standard master bathroom, expect an inspection fee that includes a detailed moisture assessment and a written report with findings. Remediation costs vary significantly based on the extent of the damage; if it's contained to regrouting and resealing, it's a smaller project. If wall cavities are affected, the scope and price increase.

Before calling a pro, ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning properly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately can also help manage the humidity. Any company you hire should provide a clear scope of work and guarantee their remediation, not just the cleaning.
