How to safely clean and prevent bedroom closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. We keep the AC running most of the time but it seems really humid in that enclosed space, especially after the recent weather. What’s the best way to clean this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or tricks to stop it from coming back in a Dubai apartment?

The black speckled mold in your closet is likely due to trapped humid air condensing on the cooler interior wall, a common issue in Dubai apartments with continuous AC. For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it dry. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root structure. The key is to address the moisture source. That enclosed space needs airflow; leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day. A small desiccant dehumidifier or even a rechargeable moisture absorber placed inside the closet can measurably reduce humidity levels. For a more permanent solution, ask your building management if they can check the AC airflow and duct sealing for that room, as poor circulation is often the root cause.

If the mold covers a larger area, returns after cleaning, or if anyone in the household experiences persistent respiratory issues, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is advised to identify the species and the full extent of the problem.
