How to clean anf prevent mold from AC vent??« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks, and now I’m starting to see these small black speckles forming around the vent. We keep the villa pretty cool, but with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's the start of a mold problem. What’s the best way to clean this off and stop it from coming back for good?

The black speckles are likely mold growth caused by condensation from your AC unit. The combination of cold air and Dubai's high humidity creates perfect conditions for this, especially when there's a persistent leak.

First, address the leak immediately. A constantly wet surface will make any cleaning temporary. Turn off the AC unit, dry the area thoroughly, and have an HVAC technician repair the source of the moisture.

For cleaning visible mold on a non-porous surface like a vent cover, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Scrub the vent cover, let the solution sit for 10 minutes, then wipe it clean and dry it completely.

However, if the mold has spread onto the drywall or insulation inside the closet, cleaning the surface won't solve it. Porous materials often need to be cut out and replaced by a professional remediation team to prevent spores from remaining and regrowing. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it's handled safely.

To prevent recurrence, maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% using a dehumidifier. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly, including checking drain lines for clogs. Improving air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it can also reduce stagnant, humid conditions. For a confirmed infestation, a professional inspection with lab testing is the only way to identify the species and the full extent of the problem.
