Is mold behind wardrobe dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our big wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black and green fuzzy stuff spreading from the corner, probably from the humidity. I’m really worried about their health.
What’s the first thing I should do right now before I can get a professional inspection?

The mould behind your wardrobe is likely dangerous for your kids, as the coughing you describe is a common symptom of exposure. That black and green fuzzy growth indicates active colonisation, which releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds into the air they breathe. The risk is particularly high for children due to their developing respiratory systems.
The first thing to do is isolate the area. Keep the kids out of that room and close the door. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can aerosolise the spores and worsen the problem. In Dubai's high humidity, hidden condensation points behind furniture are extremely common and create perfect conditions for this type of growth. Your priority is to stop the exposure. For a situation of this visible size, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A proper assessment involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping with a thermal camera to find the water source and air/surface sampling to identify the mould species. This is crucial, as some types, like certain Aspergillus species, are more hazardous than others. A certified inspector will provide a detailed protocol for safe remediation, which is what you need to permanently resolve the health risk for your family. |
