Can I clean black mold on AC vent myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I just spotted a patch of black stuff around the vent in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably getting worse with the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach spray, or do I need to call in a professional AC cleaning service to handle it properly?

It depends on the extent. For a small, isolated patch (less than 10cm x 10cm) on a non-porous vent cover, a thorough cleaning yourself can be effective. For anything larger, inside the duct, or if there's a persistent damp smell, professional remediation is needed to address the root cause within the AC unit.
To clean a small patch yourself, use a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water, not bleach. Bleach fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space and its effectiveness on porous surfaces is limited. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Remove the vent cover, scrub it thoroughly outdoors, and let it dry completely before reinstalling. However, the visible mold is often just the symptom. In Dubai's climate, the core issue is usually inside the AC unit or ductwork where condensation provides constant moisture. Simply cleaning the vent will not stop it from returning if the internal evaporator coil or drip pan is contaminated. A recurring problem indicates a need for a professional inspection to identify and rectify the moisture source and properly treat the entire system. |
