Is damp mold causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just pulled out their winter clothes from the storage cupboard under the stairs and everything feels damp and has these black speckles in the corners. The room has no windows and I think the humidity from the summer got trapped in there. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs and what’s the safest way to clean everything with children in the house?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to their coughs. Mold exposure, especially in confined, damp spaces like a storage cupboard, is a common irritant that can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms in children, who are often more sensitive.
The combination of Dubai's high summer humidity and a sealed, unventilated space creates a perfect environment for mold growth on organic materials like cotton, linen, and leather. The black speckles are likely the visible spores of the colony. The safest first step is to isolate the contaminated items. Seal the moldy clothes in plastic bags and remove them from the house to prevent spreading spores into your living area. For your health and the children's, do not attempt to clean a significant amount of moldy items yourself. Aggressive cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, which are then inhaled. The safest approach is to have a professional assess the extent of the problem. They can identify the mold type and recommend remediation, which for porous items like clothing often involves specialized cleaning or disposal. To prevent recurrence, address the humidity source. Consider installing a small dehumidifier or moisture absorber in that cupboard and ensure the door is left ajar periodically to allow air circulation. For a proper assessment of the air quality and the mold species present, a professional inspection with lab analysis is the most reliable course of action. |
