Black mold under shower sealant: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but today I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. It’s been so humid lately, and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself this weekend?

Black mold under silicone sealant is a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. Whether you can handle it yourself depends on the extent.

For a small, isolated patch (under 1 square foot), you can DIY. Cut away all the old, contaminated silicone with a utility knife. Clean the area thoroughly with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach, then let it dry completely for at least 24 hours with a fan. Apply a new, high-quality mold-resistant silicone sealant to prevent rapid regrowth.

However, the fact you mention a "ton of mold" and a persistent musty smell suggests it may be more extensive. The visible growth is often just the surface manifestation; the underlying cause is trapped moisture within the wall or tile grout. If the mold has spread behind tiles or if you have any pre-existing respiratory conditions, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.

In many cases, the correct remediation involves removing the affected sealant and potentially some tiles to properly dry and treat the cavity, which is beyond a typical DIY scope. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate hidden dampness and can perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is important for determining the health risk. The high humidity here means mold will often return quickly if the root moisture issue isn't fully resolved.
