Black bathroom grout mold: DIY or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, and it's spreading up the wall near the shower. It's been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray, but it just comes back darker a few days later.
Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call one of those professional mold removal companies in Dubai?

The black mold in your bathroom grout is likely Stachybotrys chartarum, a moisture-loving species common in Dubai's high humidity. Bleach often fails on porous surfaces like grout—it bleaches the surface but leaves the root structure intact, causing rapid regrowth.
For a small area, try undiluted white vinegar applied directly to the grout lines, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. If it returns, the moisture source isn't controlled. In villas, this is often condensation from cold water pipes inside the wall or inadequate bathroom ventilation. Running the exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower is essential. Professional remediation becomes necessary if the mold has spread behind tiles or into wall cavities, which is common when it's climbing the wall. They use industrial-grade desiccants and HEPA vacuums to remove spores and address the hidden moisture source. In Dubai, look for a company that provides a post-remediation verification (PRV) test from an independent lab—this is the only way to confirm the mold and its food source (moisture) are truly gone, not just cleaned superficially. |
