Can we clean black mold ourselves or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach, or do we need to call a professional company to handle it?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under 1 square foot) caused by surface condensation, a DIY cleaning with a detergent solution can be effective. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and its fumes are problematic in enclosed spaces. However, if the mold is on drywall, is larger, or has returned after cleaning, the moisture source is likely inside the wall, requiring professional remediation.

The recent humidity spike is a classic trigger here. Interior walls in Dubai can develop condensation from the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the non-insulated wall, creating a hidden moisture reservoir. Your husband's symptoms are a common reaction to mold spores in the sleeping environment.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is prudent. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden source within the wall cavity that DIY cleaning can't address. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and using HEPA filtration to capture spores, followed by applying an antimicrobial coating. This comprehensive approach, backed by post-remediation verification testing from an independent lab, is the only way to ensure the issue is resolved and won't recur.
