Urgent: Black mold in AC duct making kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been making my kids cough at night for the past couple of weeks. I finally pulled the vent cover off in their bedroom and the inside of the duct is completely black and fuzzy. What’s the proper way to get this professionally tested and cleaned in Dubai, and how urgent is it?

Your situation requires immediate attention. The visible black growth and your children's symptoms strongly suggest a mold issue that needs professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, AC units are a primary breeding ground for mold due to constant condensation and high humidity, especially in older villas in areas like Al Barsha.

For proper testing, you need a certified mold inspector who uses air and surface sampling. The samples are then analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the specific species and concentration. This is critical, as not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but many types can cause the respiratory irritation your children are experiencing.

The cleaning process is not a simple DIY job. Reputable remediation companies will contain the area, use HEPA-filtered vacuums and antimicrobial agents to clean the ducts, and address the underlying moisture source—often a clogged drain pan or insufficient insulation causing condensation. They should provide before-and-after lab reports to verify the air quality has been restored to safe levels. Given the health symptoms, I would consider this urgent and recommend limiting the children's exposure to that room until it is resolved.
