Mold in bedroom causing cough: professional help needed now?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’ve just found patches of black and green mold in the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should call a professional for an assessment immediately, especially with children experiencing persistent symptoms. The combination of visible growth and health effects indicates a more serious issue that has likely been developing for some time.

In Dubai's high humidity, mold found on an exterior wall often points to a condensation problem or a hidden leak within the wall cavity itself, allowing spores to spread unseen. The type of mold is also critical; some species commonly found in damp indoor environments here are more strongly associated with respiratory irritation.

While you wait for a professional, minimize exposure. Keep the bedroom door closed, avoid disturbing the mold (as this releases more spores), and run a dehumidifier if you have one. Over-the-counter cleaning with bleach is not recommended as it only addresses surface discoloration and not the root moisture problem or the deeper mycotoxins.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source, assess the extent of contamination (often worse behind walls), and include air or surface sampling to identify the species. This diagnostic step is essential, as remediation protocols differ based on the type and scope of the infestation. For a situation involving health symptoms, a science-driven approach with verifiable before-and-after testing is the safest course of action.
