Can I clean mold on wall myself or call proffesional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It started getting worse after the humidity last month and now I'm worried it's affecting our clothes. Is this something I can clean with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies in Dubai?

It depends on the extent and type of mold. For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter) that appeared due to temporary humidity, you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, the location behind a wardrobe in a humid climate like Dubai is a classic trouble spot, suggesting a persistent moisture issue that DIY cleaning will not fix.

For a DIY attempt, use a mix of detergent and water or a vinegar solution, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or plaster. More importantly, you must identify and address the moisture source. In your case, this is likely condensation from the air conditioning creating a cold wall surface or a hidden plumbing leak. Simply wiping the spots away without solving the humidity problem guarantees it will return.

Given that the mold is spreading and you're concerned about contamination of belongings, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can perform moisture mapping to find the exact water source and conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. In Dubai's climate, where AC runs year-round, this kind of hidden condensation issue is extremely common and often requires more than a surface clean. Professional remediation ensures the mold is properly contained and removed, preventing spores from spreading to other areas of your home during the cleaning process.
