Black mold in bedroom: DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. Ever since the heavy dew season started, my husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches. I’m really worried this is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should we call a professional company right away?

Given your symptoms and the location, this is likely a condensation issue common in Dubai villas, especially during the humid dew season. The exterior wall is colder from AC, and warm, humid air entering the closet condenses, creating the damp environment mold needs to grow. The black patch and your persistent symptoms suggest professional assessment is the safest first step.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be effective if you are healthy and not immuno-compromised. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water. Allow it to dry completely. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet, ensure the AC is not set too cold, and consider using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel. However, given that the mold is on a structural, exterior wall and you are both experiencing physical symptoms, the mold may be more extensive inside the wall cavity. Disturbing it yourself could aerosolize a significant number of spores throughout your bedroom. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the hidden extent without cross-contamination. They can also identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol; what is commonly called "black mold" can be several types with varying health impacts. For a situation with evident health effects, a science-driven approach with verified before-and-after testing is the most reliable way to ensure the problem is resolved and your indoor air quality is restored. |
