Should I get my AC ducts inspected for mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe, which is always cold and damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but with the humidity lately it's gotten worse and my allergies are going crazy. I’m in a two-bedroom in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and worried it’s spread into the AC ducts. Should I just get a company to do a full inspection and treatment, and what’s the realistic cost for something like that in Dubai?

Yes, you should get your AC ducts inspected for mold. Your description of a damp, earthy smell from the AC, combined with a cold, damp wall and visible black growth, strongly indicates a moisture problem that has likely spread into the HVAC system. The consistent humidity and year-round AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold in hidden, cool areas like behind furniture and within ductwork.

For a situation this advanced, a professional inspection is the most reliable course of action. DIY assessments often miss the full extent of contamination within the duct system. A proper inspection involves using tools like borescopes to view inside ducts and should identify the moisture source—often condensation from poorly insulated pipes or a clogged drain pan.

The cost for inspection and remediation in Dubai varies significantly based on your apartment's size, the system's complexity, and the contamination's severity. A standard two-bedroom treatment is a mid-range project. The most critical factor is choosing a provider who offers verifiable proof of cleanliness, such as before-and-after lab reports from air or swab samples. This documentation ensures the problem is solved, not just temporarily masked. Always request a detailed assessment and quote before any work begins.
