How to treat and prevent mold in Mirdif bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 5 years, but this past humid season, we started getting these small black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. The area always feels a bit damp and has a really earthy smell. What’s the most effective way to treat this ourselves and prevent it from coming back next summer?

That sounds like a classic case of condensation-induced mold, very common here due to the high humidity. The outside wall and enclosed closet create a cold surface where moisture from the air condenses, providing the perfect environment for mold growth.

For treatment, first address the moisture source. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality without killing the roots. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry.

Prevention is key. You need to increase air circulation and reduce humidity in that closet. Leave the closet doors ajar regularly. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. For a more permanent solution, have an AC technician check if that room's vent needs adjusting to improve airflow to that corner. Ensure your villa's AC is set to a consistent temperature to minimize temperature fluctuations that cause condensation.

If the speckles return quickly after cleaning, cover a larger area, or if anyone in the household experiences respiratory issues, a professional inspection is advised. They can use thermal imaging to identify the exact condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem, ensuring the remediation is targeted and effective. In severe cases, this may involve improving the wall's insulation or applying anti-microbial coatings.
