Can I clean mold in AC ducts myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I finally lifted the vent cover on our AC unit in the master bedroom. I can see what looks like black, dusty spots all along the inside of the duct. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach spray, or is it time to call one of those professional duct cleaning companies?

The black, dusty spots you're seeing are a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates constant condensation inside ducts. While it's often a mix of dust and mold, the specific type matters for health risks, especially with kids coughing.
Cleaning it yourself with a bleach spray is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous in enclosed ducts, and you'll only clean the visible surface, missing the root colony deeper in the system. Disturbing it without proper containment can also spread spores throughout your home. For a situation involving potential health symptoms, a professional inspection is the most prudent step. They can use borescopes to assess the full extent of contamination deep within the ductwork and recommend a targeted approach. Reputable companies in Dubai should follow DM and DHA guidelines for indoor air quality and be able to provide before-and-after testing data from an accredited lab to verify the cleanup's effectiveness, not just a visual improvement. This is crucial for ensuring your family's health is protected. |
