AC mold back after cleaning: urgent fix needed?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past few weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold on the wall behind my clothes. I wiped it but it came back darker in just a couple of days. Given how humid it is here, is this something I need to get fixed immediately, or can it wait until next week?

Yes, this requires immediate attention. The rapid regrowth after wiping indicates an active moisture source—the AC leak—is continuously feeding the mold. In Dubai's high humidity, this creates an ideal environment for proliferation.

The primary step is to stop the leak. Have a certified HVAC technician inspect and repair the AC unit to eliminate the moisture source. Merely cleaning the visible mold is ineffective if the wall cavity or insulation behind it is damp, which is almost certainly the case.

For a situation involving building materials and a recurring leak, professional remediation is strongly advised. The mold is likely more extensive inside the wall. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the structure.

After remediation, ensure the area is completely dry before repairs. To confirm the space is safe, consider post-remediation verification testing. This is a scenario where waiting increases the scope of damage and potential health risks from prolonged spore exposure.
