How to permanently remove bathroom mold behind vanity?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in JVC has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of weeks, and I finally pulled back the wooden vanity today to find black and greenish mold spreading on the wall behind it. With the humidity lately, I guess the pipe condensation has been leaking. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold and prevent it from coming back for good?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's humidity, pipe condensation is a common issue. Dry the area completely with fans or a dehumidifier; without eliminating the water, the mold will return.

For the visible growth, scrub the wall with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. For porous surfaces like drywall, the affected section often needs to be cut out and replaced, as mold penetrates deeply.

Prevention is critical. Insulate the cold-water pipes to prevent future condensation. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functional and run it during and for at least 20 minutes after showers. In a high-humidity climate like JVC, a small dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the bathroom can help maintain lower humidity levels.

For a spread of this nature, a professional inspection is wise to assess the extent behind the wall. They can perform a moisture meter reading to confirm the wall cavity is dry and use industry-grade antimicrobial treatments. The most effective remediation includes sealing the area, removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved biocides to prevent regrowth.

If the musty smell persists after cleaning, it indicates hidden mold or remaining moisture, requiring further investigation.
