How to clean bathroom mold and who to contact?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this disgusting black mold growing along the bottom of the bathroom wall behind the toilet. It’s definitely worse after every shower. I’m in a Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and I'm worried it's a bigger issue with the ventilation. What's the most effective way to clean this and who should I contact if it's a building maintenance problem?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is almost always due to excess humidity and inadequate ventilation, not a leak. The constant AC use creates significant temperature differences that lead to condensation on cooler surfaces like walls and tiles, especially in windowless bathrooms common in JVC apartments.
For the existing growth, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover spray is effective. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Always wear gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling spores. For painted drywall, be cautious as scrubbing can damage the surface; the mold may have penetrated, requiring a repaint with mold-inhibiting primer afterwards. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the fan is weak or non-existent, this is a building maintenance issue. Wiping down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee immediately after showering can also measurably reduce moisture buildup. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, or if you suspect it has spread behind the wall, the ventilation system itself needs assessment. In a rental apartment, your first contact is the building owner or property management company. They are responsible for ensuring the mechanical ventilation system is functional, as per common tenancy agreements. If they are unresponsive, you can reference Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards for indoor living conditions. For a severe, recurring problem, a professional inspection can identify the exact mold species and the extent of the issue, which provides concrete evidence for your landlord. |
