Should I test or clean this dangerous bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, and now I’ve found this black, powdery stuff spreading along the wall behind the headboard. My throat has been constantly sore and I’ve been getting headaches every morning since it started. How dangerous is this black mold in Dubai, and should I get a professional test done or just clean it myself?

The black, powdery substance is likely Stachybotrys, commonly called "black mold," which thrives in the constant dampness from your AC leak. Your sore throat and morning headaches are classic symptoms of mold exposure, as spores become airborne and are inhaled while you sleep.

In Dubai's climate, this situation is serious. The high humidity and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for rapid mold growth, not just on the surface but deep within the wall cavity. Simply wiping the visible mold is a significant health risk—it will aerosolize the spores—and it won't address the root moisture problem or the hidden colonization.

A professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the exact species through lab analysis to confirm the risk level, locate the full extent of the infestation with moisture meters and borescopes, and trace the source of the AC leak. Reputable companies in Dubai should provide a detailed report with lab findings and a scope of work for proper remediation, which involves containment, safe removal of contaminated materials, and fixing the underlying moisture issue. This is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely and your health is protected.
