Black spots in bedroom corner: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right above the window and seems worse since the humidity started rising last month. What's the most effective way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management first?

The black spots in your bedroom corner are likely mold, and Dubai's high humidity combined with air conditioning creates perfect conditions for it. The wall-ceiling junction is a common trouble spot where cool interior surfaces meet warm, humid air, causing condensation.
For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is often condensation from the AC, so check that your unit is set to a consistently cool temperature and that its condensate drain line is not clogged. Using a dehumidifier can also help. However, if the staining is extensive, has penetrated the drywall or paint, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is beyond a surface fix. In this case, you should involve building management. Under Dubai municipality guidelines, they are responsible for the building's structure and common systems that could be causing the dampness, such as external water leaks or inadequate insulation. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the root cause, as hidden moisture within the wall cavity is a common problem here. They can perform moisture mapping and air quality tests to determine the full scope before any remediation begins. |
