What's the safest way to clean shower mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just noticed black spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. The room has no window and the humidity just seems to linger no matter how long we run the exhaust fan. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this mold with young children in the house?

That black grout mold is common in windowless Dubai bathrooms, where high humidity and condensation from showers create a perfect breeding ground. The safest approach with children present prioritizes containing spores and using non-toxic cleaners.

First, increase ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door closed to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms. For immediate cleaning, a paste of baking soda and water or distilled white vinegar can be effective on surface mold. Apply it to the grout, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Never mix cleaning products, especially vinegar and bleach, as this creates toxic gas.

The lingering humidity suggests your exhaust fan may be undersized for the room. It should generate enough suction to hold a piece of toilet paper against the vent grill when running. If it doesn't, upgrading the fan is necessary to solve the moisture problem long-term.

Persistent coughing in children, coupled with visible mold, warrants caution. Some species, like Stachybotrys (black mold), can produce irritants. Disturbing it with scrubbing can aerosolize these spores. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area (more than one square meter), or is suspected behind tiles, a professional inspection with lab analysis is the safest course. They can identify the mold type and contain the area during remediation to prevent cross-contamination into your home's living spaces.
