How to safely remove toddler's bedroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler's bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had a lingering damp smell since the humidity really kicked in last month. I just pulled out the wooden chest where we store his stuffed toys, and the back of it against the wall is covered in fuzzy black spots. I’m really worried his constant runny nose is connected to this. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this to make sure the mold doesn't come back and affect his health?

The fuzzy black spots behind the wooden chest are a clear sign of a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. That damp smell and your toddler's runny nose are very likely connected. The first step is to move your son to another room until the area is fully remediated to prevent further exposure.

For a small area like this, you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a detergent like soapy water can be effective for surface mold on non-porous materials. However, since this is on wood, which is porous, the mold may have penetrated deeper. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid bleach as it only bleaches the surface and does not address the root moisture problem.

The most critical step is to identify and stop the moisture source. The mold grew because of trapped humid air between the furniture and the cold wall. This is a classic problem here, where air-conditioned cold walls meet warm, humid air, causing condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must leave at least a two-inch gap between furniture and exterior walls to allow for air circulation. A dehumidifier in the room can also help manage ambient moisture levels.

Given that a toddler is experiencing symptoms, the safest approach is professional assessment. They can confirm the mold is thoroughly removed from the porous wood and perform an air quality test to ensure no spores were dispersed into the room during cleaning, which could aggravate his allergies. For health-sensitive situations, this verification is highly recommended.
