Is black mold in closet a maintenance emergency?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's getting bigger. Is this something I need to call a maintenance emergency about today, or can it wait until next week for a regular visit?

Black mold in a closet is not typically a maintenance emergency that requires a same-day response, but it should be addressed within the week. The immediate risk to a healthy adult is low, but the presence of visible growth means the conditions for it are established and it will likely continue to spread.
Your situation is classic for Dubai's climate. The wall is a "cold bridge" where the outside heat meets your AC-cooled interior, causing condensation inside the wall cavity. This trapped moisture, combined with our high humidity, creates a perfect environment for mold. The recent humidity has simply accelerated its growth from hidden to visible. For now, you can take two steps. First, increase air circulation in the closet by leaving the door open and ensuring no items are pressed against the wall. Second, wipe the visible patch with a solution of diluted detergent (1 part detergent to 10 parts water), wear a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. This is only a temporary surface fix. The critical step is a professional inspection to identify and resolve the source of the moisture within the wall. Simply cleaning the surface will not stop it from returning. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to pinpoint the condensation issue and recommend remediation, which often involves improving insulation or ventilation to break the cycle. In many cases, a lab test to identify the mold type is advised, especially if household members have respiratory sensitivities, to understand the specific health implications. |
