Can I clean black mold myself or acll maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a little damp. I'm worried it's spreading from inside the AC unit or a leak. Can I clean this myself with vinegar or is this something I need to get my building's maintenance to handle?

Black mold on an exterior wall in a Dubai bedroom, especially with a damp feel, strongly suggests condensation or an external leak is the primary issue, not your AC unit. The high humidity here, combined with cold spots on walls from constant air conditioning, creates the perfect environment for this.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with undiluted white vinegar, which is effective against many mold types. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains. You must identify and stop the dampness.

Since the wall is damp and it's an exterior corner, the building's maintenance team must be involved. This is a structural moisture issue they are responsible for investigating and repairing, potentially a leak in the building envelope or insufficient insulation. Dubai's strata laws typically hold the building ownership responsible for the external structure.

Cleaning the visible mold without fixing the leak will result in it returning quickly. For your health and to prevent property damage, report it to maintenance immediately. If the problem persists after their repair, a professional inspection can then identify any remaining mold and verify the environment is dry.
