How to clean and prevent closet mold on interior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's starting to spread. What’s the best way to safely clean this myself and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in a Dubai closet is almost always due to condensation from high humidity. Your interior wall likely has a cold spot where the air-conditioning chills the surface, causing moisture from the humid air to condense and create a perfect environment for mold.

For a small area (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it can worsen airborne spores. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Scrub the area gently, let it dry completely, and then consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

Preventing its return is the critical part. You must address the humidity and condensation. First, improve air circulation in the closet. Leave the door ajar regularly, and consider a small battery-operated dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside. For the wall itself, identify if it's a cold bridge from the AC; rearranging closet contents to allow air to circulate against that wall can help. Ultimately, maintaining indoor humidity below 60% is the goal, which often requires running a dehumidifier alongside your AC during the most humid months.

If the spots return quickly, cover more than a square foot, or you notice a musty smell, this indicates a persistent issue. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source and mold type, which is important for a permanent solution.
