Is toxic mold causing my kids' illness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches for the past month, and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled our large wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner, probably from the last time we had that heavy humidity. Could this be the reason they're so sick, and what's the absolute fastest way to deal with this properly?

It very likely is. The symptoms you describe – persistent coughing and headaches – are classic signs of prolonged exposure to a significant mold source. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during the summer months, creates perfect conditions for mold growth behind furniture and in poorly ventilated corners, exactly as you've found.
The term "toxic mold" is often misused. While the black mold you found (Stachybotrys chartarum) can produce mycotoxins, the more immediate health issue for your children is the high concentration of mold spores themselves, which are severe respiratory irritants. Their smaller lung capacity makes children particularly vulnerable. The fastest and safest way to handle this is a two-step process. First, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing a large patch will aerosolize millions of spores, potentially making the air quality worse. For a growth of this size and given the health symptoms, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly advised. They will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove the contaminated materials. Second, the underlying cause must be fixed. This is almost always a moisture issue. In Jumeirah villas, it's often due to condensation from AC ducts in false ceilings, a small leak in the plumbing, or moisture wicking through the wall from the outside humidity. A proper assessment will identify and recommend a fix for the source to prevent it from returning immediately after cleanup. Once the mold is professionally removed and the moisture source resolved, you should see a noticeable improvement in your children's symptoms within a relatively short period. |
