Is black mold in my Dubai shower causing allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled mold creeping out from behind the silicone sealant in our master bathroom shower. Since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, my husband and I have both had this persistent stuffy nose and itchy eyes that won’t go away. Is this type of mold likely causing our allergy symptoms, and what’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good in this Dubai climate?

Black speckled mold emerging from silicone sealant is a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers. The persistent stuffy nose and itchy eyes you describe are classic symptoms of mold exposure and are very likely connected, especially if the symptoms appeared or worsened around the same time as the visible growth.

The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the visible growth and the hidden moisture source. Simply wiping the surface is a temporary fix. The mold's root system (hyphae) is likely growing behind the tiles and within the wall, which is why it re-emerges. For a permanent resolution, the old silicone must be completely removed, the underlying area professionally treated with antimicrobial solutions to kill the embedded growth, and new, high-quality sealant applied.

Given your symptoms and the villa's age, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of damage behind the walls, which is common when mold breaches the sealant. In many cases, improving the bathroom’s ventilation is crucial; ensure your exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showering. For severe, recurring cases, a lab test can identify the specific mold species to better understand the health implications and confirm the remediation was successful.
