ac leak causing mold: diy bleach or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below it, and now I’m seeing a few dark black spots spreading out from the wall. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the weather got more humid. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company, and what would that kind of service roughly cost?

That leak and the visible black spots indicate active mold growth, which is common here with our high humidity and constant AC use. The moisture from the AC drip is feeding it.

For a small area (under one square foot), a DIY approach with a dedicated mold cleaner (not plain bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces) can be attempted. You must fix the AC leak first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

However, given that it's spreading from the wall and has been ongoing, the moisture has likely seeped into the drywall or carpet backing, which you cannot properly treat yourself. In these cases, professional remediation is strongly advised to ensure it's thoroughly removed and to identify any hidden growth. The cost for professional service is not fixed; it varies significantly based on the extent of the contamination, the materials affected, and the required containment procedures. You would need to request an on-site assessment from a certified provider to get an accurate scope and quote. Look for companies that provide before-and-after testing to verify the area is truly clean.
