Could mold be causing my family's persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a bunch of jackets and sweaters covered in black and green fuzzy spots. The whole villa smells damp no matter how much I clean. Could this mold be the reason my family is getting sick?

Yes, mold could absolutely be the cause of your family's persistent cough, and your situation is unfortunately common in Dubai villas. The damp smell and visible growth on stored items are strong indicators of a significant mold problem, often originating from a hidden moisture source like a small leak or severe condensation in that under-stair cupboard.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold, especially in poorly ventilated, dark storage areas where condensation accumulates. The constant coughing is a typical reaction to inhaling mold spores and mycotoxins, which are airborne irritants. For children and those with sensitivities, this exposure can lead to persistent respiratory symptoms like coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies.

You need to identify and stop the moisture source. Inspect that cupboard and the surrounding walls for any plumbing leaks or water stains. Check if the AC unit's condensate drain line is clogged or leaking, as this is a frequent cause of hidden dampness. Immediately remove the moldy clothing and items; sealing them in plastic bags can help prevent spreading spores throughout the house. Do not attempt to clean them yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores.

Given the widespread damp smell and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source and assess the full extent of the growth, which is often inside walls or under flooring. A certified company can then provide a remediation plan that includes containment to prevent cross-contamination and proper disposal of affected porous materials like drywall or insulation. For your peace of mind and your family's health, identifying and resolving this is the priority.
