Black mold in closet: DIY or call Dubai Marina management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I immediately call my building management in Dubai Marina?

That black patch is a common issue in Dubai Marina due to the high humidity and condensation on exterior walls, especially during this season.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Clean the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover. Discard any contaminated fabrics. The critical step is to identify and stop the moisture source—it's often condensation from the AC. Wipe down the wall regularly and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the closet. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you suspect it's spreading behind the wall, do not attempt further DIY. In this case, you should immediately notify your building management. Under Dubai regulations, structural issues and leaks in common building elements are typically the responsibility of the building owner or management corporation. They should dispatch a professional to investigate the wall cavity for hidden moisture and mold growth. A professional inspection is strongly advised if there's a persistent musty smell or if household members experience unexplained respiratory irritation. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess what's hidden and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. |
