How to treat closet mold and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to get these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes we stored in there. We had the room repainted last winter but the musty smell is back already, and I'm worried it's spreading from the wall behind the shelving. What's the most effective way to treat this and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I permanently place in there to stop it from coming back?

The black speckles and musty smell returning after repainting strongly suggest an active moisture source behind that wall, likely from condensation or a minor leak. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are common hotspots for hidden mold growth due to thermal bridging and lack of airflow.
For effective treatment, start by removing all items from the closet. Clean non-porous surfaces like the walls and shelves with a solution of detergent and water. For leather goods, wipe them down with a damp cloth and a leather-specific cleaner, then allow them to dry completely away from the affected area. However, this only addresses surface-level signs. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. Given the problem returned after a repaint, a professional inspection is highly recommended to assess the wall cavity. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to find the root cause, which could be anything from a leaking AC condensate drain pipe to insufficient insulation causing condensation. To prevent recurrence, control the humidity. A desiccant-type dehumidifier is most effective for small, enclosed spaces like closets in our high-humidity environment. Look for a compact unit with a continuous drainage option or a large-capacity reservoir. Permanently leaving a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel in the closet can help, but it is a secondary measure and won't solve a larger hidden moisture problem. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently, as this is your primary dehumidification tool. |
