How to safely remove bathroom mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading along the ceiling above the shower. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn't strong enough to handle it. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this safely and prevent it from coming back?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch like yours, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated during application. Scrub the area, let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Prevention is critical in our climate. Your exhaust fan is likely undersized; it should be strong enough to hold a piece of toilet paper to the vent when running. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down walls and the ceiling to remove condensation immediately after bathing is highly effective. For persistent humidity, a small desiccant dehumidifier in the bathroom can make a significant difference. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources and assess if the species present require specialized remediation, which is often the case with long-term growth in rental properties. |
