Best product to kill shower mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's in a windowless bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment, and the smell is really musty. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this mold for good?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small, surface-level patch, a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution or a chlorine-based mold remover from ACE Hardware or Carrefour can be effective. Apply directly to the grout, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.
However, if the musty smell persists after cleaning or the mold reappears quickly, the issue is likely deeper within the grout or behind the tiles. Surface cleaning only addresses the visible spores, not the root cause. In windowless bathrooms like yours, inadequate ventilation allows moisture to penetrate, feeding mold growth inside the wall cavity. For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the moisture damage. Remediation often requires removing the affected grout, treating the substrate with antimicrobial solutions, and regrouting with a mold-inhibiting product. The most critical step is installing a powerful exhaust fan that runs during and for 30 minutes after showers to control humidity. Without addressing the ventilation, mold will almost certainly return. |
