Black mold in closet: leak check first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it's appeared and spread. I'm worried it's from a hidden leak in the wall or just the damp air. What's the best way to handle this properly and who should I call to check for a leak first, a regular handyman or a specialized company?

Start with a leak inspection. In Dubai's climate, the sudden appearance of black mould in a closet is often due to a hidden water leak from a pipe or AC condensation line within the wall, not just ambient humidity. A regular handyman can open the wall to check for a leak, which is the crucial first step.

If a leak is found and repaired, the area must be thoroughly dried before any mould remediation begins. For a patch that appeared quickly, a professional mould inspection is recommended to assess potential spread inside the wall cavity. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check without unnecessary demolition.

For remediation, the standard is to isolate and remove affected materials. Simply spraying bleach is ineffective and can worsen indoor air quality by releasing spores. The goal is physical removal and addressing the root moisture source. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture-based identification to confirm the mould type and verify cleanup effectiveness with post-remediation testing, which is the only way to be sure it's fully resolved.
