AC mold in bedroom unit: professional cleaning or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor that’s been getting worse since the weather turned humid last month. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy heads and sore throats that clear up once we leave for work. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the inside of the unit has black speckles all over it. Is this definitely mold, and should we get a professional company to handle it or is this something we can clean ourselves safely?

The black speckles and damp odor are classic signs of microbial growth, which is almost certainly mold. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for condensation inside AC units, leading to this exact problem.
For a surface-level issue confined to the filter and the immediate interior you can see, a DIY clean might be possible. However, given the symptoms you're both experiencing—stuffy heads and sore throats that resolve when you leave the room—this suggests the mold has colonized deeper, less accessible parts of the evaporator coil and drip pan. Disturbing it with a DIY clean can aerosolize a high concentration of spores directly into your bedroom, potentially worsening the problem. Professional remediation is strongly advised here. The goal isn't just to wipe away visible growth but to properly disinfect the entire internal assembly and, crucially, identify and address the moisture source that caused it. In Dubai, this is often a clogged condensate drain line or insufficient insulation around the unit. A reputable provider will use EPA-registered disinfectants and containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination, followed by a moisture assessment. They should also be able to provide before-and-after documentation of the cleanup, not just a visual inspection. Until it's addressed, running the unit may continue to circulate spores. Consider using a standalone air purifier with a HEPA filter in the bedroom as a temporary measure. |
