How to remove mold from wardrobe in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the back of the wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's definitely worse after the recent humidity. I'm really worried it's mold and that it's affecting our clothes and health. What is the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black spotting in your wardrobe is almost certainly mold, and your observation about the recent humidity is key. Dubai's climate, especially during the summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes on external walls.

For a small, surface-level area, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often effective; spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. For persistent spots, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be used, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated as bleach fumes are strong. Afterwards, dry the area completely with a fan. The critical step is to identify and address the moisture source. This is often condensation from the AC, either from a cold external wall or due to the unit being set too cold. Improving air circulation around the wardrobe is essential; leave the doors ajar occasionally and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier inside.

However, if the mold has penetrated the wood or drywall, or covers an area larger than roughly one square meter, this is a job for a professional remediation company. Disturbing extensive mold yourself can release a large number of spores throughout your home. A proper assessment will determine if the wall cavity behind the wardrobe is affected, which is very common here. Professionals use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during removal, which is the standard for effective remediation. For health concerns, especially with infants or anyone with respiratory issues, a professional inspection is always recommended to identify the species and extent.
