Urgent: black mold in kids' room, DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found patches of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom curtains, probably from all the humidity after the last foggy mornings. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm seriously worried about their health. What's the safest and fastest way to get rid of this myself, or should I just call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

Black mold in a child's bedroom requires immediate and careful action. Given the health symptoms and the humid conditions in Dubai, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The persistent cough in your children is a significant indicator that the mold spores are already airborne and affecting indoor air quality.

For immediate containment, avoid disturbing the patch. Do not wipe or spray it, as this can release a large number of spores. Isolate the area by keeping the door closed and the window open if possible. Ensure the room's AC is turned off to prevent the system from circulating spores to other parts of the home.

DIY removal is only advised for very small, isolated patches (less than one square foot) and only if no one with respiratory issues is present. This involves carefully sealing the area, using an EPA-approved fungicide—not bleach—and wearing proper PPE like an N95 mask and gloves. However, in a bedroom with ongoing health symptoms, this is a significant risk.

In Dubai's climate, visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. The high humidity and constant AC use mean the moisture source is likely ongoing, and hidden growth inside walls or the AC unit itself is common. A professional inspection will identify the root moisture cause, assess the full extent of contamination, and safely contain and remove the biomass using HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. They can also provide post-remediation verification, often through third-party lab testing, to confirm the space is safe. For this scenario, calling a certified remediation provider is the safest and most effective course of action.
