Mold in bedroom closet: clean or call remediation company?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started showing these black splotchy patches, and it’s been spreading since the last humid spell. We found some of our winter clothes stored in there have a really strong, damp smell. I'm worried about the health side of it and the cost to fix it properly. Should I just get a cleaning company to handle it, or is this something I absolutely need to call a specialized mold remediation company for, and what’s the price difference I should expect?

Visible spreading black patches and a persistent damp smell indicate an active mold colony, not just surface dust. In Dubai's high humidity, this is commonly caused by condensation from an AC duct running through the ceiling or a minor roof leak trapping moisture.

For a closet-sized area, a general cleaning company might scrub the visible stain but will likely miss the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth. Specialized remediation is advised because the porous ceiling material and your affected clothing require proper containment and treatment to prevent spore dispersal into your living space. The remediation process should include identifying and correcting the moisture source, physically removing contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming.

The price difference is significant; a basic clean might be a few hundred dirhams, while full remediation with proper protocols and post-clearance testing will be a larger investment. However, for a health-related issue in a bedroom, the remediation cost is justified to resolve the problem completely. Start by having a professional inspection to assess the moisture source and the extent of the growth behind the surface; this diagnosis is crucial for deciding the next step.
