Mold found behind sofa: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for a couple of months now and I’m starting to worry it’s something in the house. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our living room in Jumeirah and found a patch of black mold hiding behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. I have no idea how to handle this or what it costs to get a proper mold inspection done here. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach or is it absolutely necessary to call in a professional company?

Finding mold behind furniture in Dubai is extremely common due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. That black patch is likely just the visible part of a larger problem.
Do not clean it with bleach. Bleach only removes surface color and is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, where the mold roots remain. It can also release harmful spores into the air. For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous tile wall, a DIY clean with a dedicated mold remover can work. However, your situation is different. The mold was hidden behind a sofa for months, suggesting a sustained moisture source like an AC leak or seepage. This means the growth is probably extensive inside the wall cavity, which you cannot see or effectively treat yourself. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's internal damage and identify the leak's exact source—fixing that is the most critical step. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is important given your children's prolonged respiratory symptoms. This provides a clear target for remediation and verifies the home's air quality is safe afterward. The cost for a proper assessment varies based on the property size and inspection scope, but it is the only way to get a complete picture of the contamination and a science-backed plan to resolve it. |
